One of Britain's famous "V" bombers, the Avro Vulcan was a strategic bomber in service with the Royal Air Force from 1956 until 1984. It was primarily armed with nuclear weapons but it could also carry conventional bombs. During the 1982 Falklands War Vulcans were used in Operation Black Buck to carry out the longest-ranged bombing raids in history at that time. The Vulcan was designed to fly high-speed, high-altitude missions in order to evade interception. In the 1960s the mission was changed to low level flight missions. After retirement, Vulcan B.2 XH 558 was restored to flight worthiness and was flown at displays until it was permanently retired in 2015. This artwork is a depiction of that aircraft.
