STS-125 was the fifth and final Space Shuttle mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. It was the fourth servicing mission and was the only visit to the Hubble Space Telescope for Atlantis (OV-104).
Two new instruments were installed, the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph and the Wide Field Camera 3. A Fine Guidance Sensor, six gyroscopes, and two battery unit modules were also replaced. Overall, there were five spacewalks during the mission totaling 37 hours. There was also an IMAX camera aboard to record the mission.
In addition to the Hubble Servicing mission, her flights included five with classified payloads for the US Department of Defense as well as seven missions to the Russian Mir space station. Atlantis was also the on-orbit launch site for many noteworthy spacecraft including planetary probes Magellan and Galileo. Atlantis also made trips to the International Space Station delivering vital components including the US laboratory module - Destiny, the Joint Airlock Quest and multiple sections of the Integrated Truss backbone structure.
Designed to fly at least 100 missions, Atlantis flew 33 missions overall during its career, altogether orbiting the Earth a total of 4,848 times, traveling nearly 126,000,000 miles.
This is my depiction of Atlantis in flight as she glides to Earth after de-orbiting from a speed of over 17,000 MPH.
