The F-100 Super Sabre was the world's first airplane capable of exceeding the speed of sound in level flight. Known as "The Hun" doe to the F-100 designation, the Super Sabre was the first of the "Century" series of fighters. The aircraft was used extensively during the Vietnam War primarily in the ground attack and forward air control roles. The Super Sabre was eventually phased out of service in Vietnam, superseded by the F-105 Thunderchief and the F-4 Phantom II but they continued in service with Air National Guard units throughout the United States until 1980.
